Peter Tscherkassky's contemporary cut-up films

Austrian avant-garde filmmaker Peter Tscherkassky makes compelling cut-up movies from "found" 16mm and 35mm footage and samples from other movies. All of the frames and clips are treated in the darkroom, without digital tools. For Outer Space (1999), seen above, Tscherkassky chopped up and decolorized bits from The Entity, a 1982 horror film starring Barbara Hershey.

  1. Oh yeah, Tscherkassky on Boing Boing! Folk in Austin who are interested in him, we’ll be showing his work on 35mm (along with other goodies) at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz on June 1st:

  2. So glad these are finally online! I loved seeing this guy’s work in college, but could never find it anywhere!

  3. This should probably carry an epilepsy-trigger warning, especially toward the end where it begins strobing more strongly.

  4. Also watched this in a college film class and have been looking for it ever since.  Thought it was the scariest thing I’d ever seen.
