In case you've forgotten it amidst the Prism and Greek broadcaster shut-down stories, here's a reminder that the police are still engaged in a brutal crackdown on protesters across Turkey, courtesy of the Occupy Gezi Pics Tumblr:

"Taksim rainbow, Tuesday evening."

Police spray water canon directly on a protester in a wheelchair this evening in Taksim (Tuesday, June 11)

Police intervention at the Gazi highway march.

Cihangir, a neighborhood of Taksim is under a thick cloud of teargas at 2:00AM Wednesday.

  1. Turkey is a democracy and Erdogan / the AKP was re-elected two times in elections that were deemed fair and democratic even by outside observers. So the Turks have no one to blame but themselves. It’s nothing like the Arab Spring.

I can symphatize with voters/people who elect someone who turns out  incompetent or an asshole (or both). But when you re-elect such a person you are responsible and got what you deserved.

Same thing with G.W. Bush (there was a lot of head-shaking over here when he was re-elected) or Berlusconi.

  2. Thanks for the reminder.
    Short news:
+ CNN international replaced by CNN Asia by DigiTürk cable provider
+ three turkish TV channels heavily fined for reporting as live stream, allegedly “harming the physical, moral and mental development of children and young people”
+ 73 lawyers threatened, detained, abused for asking prosecutors to investigate police brutality
+ > 3000 lawyers on the streets in several provinces yesterday to protest against treatment of colleagues
+ Erdoğan reported to have stated, this morning(?), that the situation will be resolved within 24 hrs
