According to the copy on the spine it's #6 in the Dig Allen Space Explorer Adventure series by Joseph Greene, illustrated by Phil Marini and published in 1962 by Golden Press, New York. The price printed on the back cover is a whopping $1.00 (US).
This was the first book I ever bought with my own money. I got it at the annual book fair at my grammar school in 1963 - I think it was the gateway drug to my life-long sci fi habit. Now I can't wait to share it with my grandson.
