Cover for Black Magic comic book, 1954

It looks like Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, the creative duo behind Black Magic, were inspired by Tod Browning's great 1932 movie Freaks. That's Johnny Eck in the lower right.

You can watch Freaks at the Interet Archive. It has a cast of real-life circus sideshow performers. The forest scene about seven minutes in the movie blew my mind when I saw it as a teenager. As one Archve.org reviewer says, it's a "curiously life-affirming masterpiece." (Via The Psychotic Exotic)
