Earthman, your Mickey Mouse is one big stupid dope!
Earlier in the week there was some discussion of Enemy Mine, another old favorite, in our forums. I felt compelled to watch it again, and I'm glad I did.
After witnessing the death of his friend, highly trained-to-kill human space pilot Willis E. Davidge (played by a young Dennis Quaid) crash-lands on Fyrine IV while chasing the responsible Drac fighter into the ground. He hauls himself out of a fiery wreck and learns he has successfully killed both his co-pilot and the radio, but not the Drac. Davidge decides to give it another try.
He finds Jeriba (portrayed by a heavily costumed Louis Gossett, Jr.) the Drac pilot who killed his friend, and they promptly attempt to kill one another. Neither appear very good at it and eventually they realize the planet will probably kill them if they don't team up. Can these two get along? Could this simple friendship end the war? Oh, yeah.
VERDICT: This is a fun movie but it doesn't hold up as well as I'd hoped.
They really spent the effects budget on the one space fight right up front. However, I really enjoy Davidge and Jeriba sharing their cultural mores. The way the two come together is really funny. Convincing an alien that Mickey Mouse is the spiritual leader of humanity is sadly perfect.
Perhaps he is.
