Microsoft renames SkyDrive in trademark dispute

Microsoft has renamed its cloud storage service, SkyDrive, after losing out in a trademark fight with UK TV service BSkyB. It isn't their first naming foul-up, either: two years go, Microsoft renamed its Metro user interface to "Modern UI Style" after a strikingly similar tussle with a European media company. Rival Apple has a reputation for more successfully muscling in on others' established trademarks, though it has seemingly avoided taking on another British broadcaster, iTV, seated on a trademark that Apple presumably desires.

  1. Just received an email from Microsoft mentioning the name change in passing while telling me they're giving me 20GB of additional space for free. I'm going to guess the two events aren't coincidental.
