UK Ministry of Justice loses harddrive with 3,000 prisoners' data, which they forgot to encrypt

Alan sez, "The UK Ministry of Justice was just slapped with a fine for the loss of a hard disk containing data on over 3,000 prisoners. These things happen."

What got the Information Commissioner's Office upset was that the MoJ hadn't encrypted the data on disk. Apparently, as one wag noted, they know how to lock up people but not data.

The Ministry is faulted for not telling people that encryption "had to be turned on". Well, um, DUH. Nor, apparently, did they tell anyone how to check that it was properly secured.
