Lava flowing from the Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii has been creeping toward residential areas for months, and is today a mere 100 yards from the closest residential property.

People whose homes are in the lava flow path have been placed on alert for possible evacuation, the County of Hawaii announced in a special civil defense message. [via Reuters, photos by USGS]
