I'm a huge fan of the Game of Thrones HBO series, and yet I admit I don't retain half the details in this richly layered, complex, many-threaded fantasy series. Which is where Inside HBO's Game of Thrones: Season 3 & 4 comes in.
I was excited to get my hands on this "recap" in plenty of time before season 5 starts, but didn't expect it to be as enthralling and dimensional as it is – it covers the backstory of characters and fascinating details about the plot that I can't even remember watching last year. The actors, directors, costumers, and many others from the show also give their take on the motivations of the major characters, and give us their perspectives on everything from the Wildlings (or Free Folk if you're north of the Wall) to Daenerys' huge military victory to the magnetism between Jamie Lannister and Brienne… and so much more. The book not only recaps, but goes beyond with fun topics like how costumes were created, why Iceland and other exotic locations were chosen, and how the theme song came about. With nearly 200 photos and a padded cover, this is a handsome book to pore over before the fun begins in the spring.
