Adolescence is a weird, weird time in anyone's life, when it's easy to feel alienated from your peers, your family, even your own body. In Tentacles Growing Everywhere, an interactive novella by Squinky, you get to watch the experience of puberty play out for three actual aliens as they write entries in what is essentially Livejournal.
Described as an "an incredibly queer mashup of Judy Blume, Babysitters Club, and pulpy sci-fi," you follow along as three childhood friends head off to new schools and blog about their problems with crushes, bullying, and of course, the awkwardness of their changing tentacled bodies.
Although most of the game involves simply watching the journal entries unfold, you occasionally get to make choices—and hear the anxious metacommentary of each character as they ponder whether they're oversharing and occasionally delete their thoughts instead of sharing them with their friends (and the world). It's an experience that should ring true for anyone who's ever struggled with how much of themselves they want to show to the internet, or even to their friends.
Tentacles Growing Everywhere originally came out in May, but it's now available at the convenient price of "pay whatever you want" for Windows, Mac and Linux.
The Offworld Collection, presenting the very best features and essays from Offworld, is finally available to buy directly from Campo Santo for $40. I had the pleasure of designing and illustrating this splendid 250-page hardcover volume, but it’s the excellent writing, edited by Leigh Alexander and Laura Hudson, that makes it an essential buy. You […]

Bamboo has lots of uses beyond just being panda food. Things like bikes, roads, scaffolding, and musical instruments are made from the fast-growing grass. But unless you are participating in a tropical-themed LARP, you probably wouldn’t want a shirt made from bamboo stalks. So why do bamboo bed sheets make any sense? Because yarn extracted from […]
If you want to work in tech, but don’t have any desire to code web apps to help businesses sell things to other business, you might want to consider a career in cybersecurity. Judging from the apparent complete infiltration of Russian hackers in American cyberspace, it seems fair to speculate that there’s a major shortage of […]
All moms are different. But all moms like getting flowers on Mother’s Day, and that’s a fact (not, however a fact we can document in any fashion.) Instead of getting chewed out for forgetting to call her on the second Sunday of May, you can take care of it ahead of time with Teleflora’s flower […]
