Skulls carved from vegetable matter

Dimitri Tsykalov, a Russian-born sculptor living in Paris, sculpted a series of gorgeous, haunting skulls out of fruits and vegetables in the mid-2000s (previously), documenting his work with photographic prints.

This 2012 video documents one of his carvings, showing that the skull effects are all from the produce and the knife, not from manipulation of pixels after the fact. They look even better when they start to rot.

Tsykalov's other pieces are equally charming and intriguing, including assemblage sculptures of bearskin and tiger-skin rugs made from ammunition cases; anatomical cutaways made from veggies and coldcuts and guns made from charcuterie (previously).
