In 2001, Steven Soderbergh rebooted the 1960 Rat Pack classic Ocean's 11, kicking off a string of sequels of varying success (the good ones are very good, the bad ones aren't utterly terrible). Now, Gary Ross is making Ocean's Ocho, an all-female "spinoff."
How much do you want to bet that many man-children will decry this as sacrilege, despite never having breathed a word of disapprobation over the 2001 reboot?
The Ocho cast is stunning: Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna and Awkwafina.
I can't wait to see this. The Ghostbusters reboot was the best movie I saw all summer (though the toxic masculinity squad have done all they could to rubbish it).
This is a trend I can get behind. Next up, pretty please, an all-woman Sneakers reboot?
Ocean's Eleven director Steven Soderbergh, who is based in New York and is expected to be deeply involved with the spinoff— perhaps taking on a below-the-line job like he has done on other studio films, such as Magic Mike XXL — is producing solo (Ocean's Eleven producer Jerry Weintraub passed away last year). Olivia Milch and Ross wrote the screenplay. The plan is for Soderbergh to finish shooting his own heist film Logan Lucky in Atlanta before segueing to the Ocean's project.
