Laughing Stanford rapist Brock Turner to be released after only 3 months in jail

Brock Turner is scheduled to be getting out of jail this week, three months early.

Turner was sentenced to 6 months, following a conviction of three counts of sexual assault on the Stanford University campus.

Recently released documents from the case show that Turner admitted to laughing out loud when confronted by bystanders, mid-rape.

"I noticed that he was smiling. So I said, 'Why are you smiling? Stop smiling,'" testified Peter Jonsson, one of two Stanford grad students who approached Turner and intervened while he was on top of an unconscious woman outside of a frat house.

In court papers, Turner doesn't deny giggling as he lifted his prone body off of his victim.

"I was laughing at the situation of how ridiculous it was," he testified, according to the documents.

Turner's September release means that he will leave the Santa Clara County jail three months early for good behavior, as online records have indicated for some months.

His victim wrote a powerful letter to the judge about the impact the assault had on her body and her life.

In a decision that outraged many, Judge Aaron Persky gave the "star athlete" rapist an extraordinarily lenient sentence. Persky has since stepped down from criminal trials altogether.

Judge Persky "asked to be reassigned from hearing criminal cases at the Palo Alto courthouse, where he has been under intense fire since early June for sentencing former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner to six months in jail rather than a longer term in jail for sexually assaulting an intoxicated, unconscious woman outside a fraternity party," the San Jose Mercury News reports.
