Pitch Blak Brass Band: hip-hop/brass with a lot of funk and a lot of beat

This week's Judge John Hodgman podcast is a live show recorded in Brooklyn, with guest music from the Pitch Blak Brass Band, whose music was so fantastically good that I immediately purchased their debut album, You See Us, and I am listening to it right now and loving it.

It's just what it appears to be: hip-hop with a LOT of brass and a lot of beat. Shades of all the brass backing David Byrne and St Vincent's Love This Giant and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band -- alternately dirty and crisp, always march-y, and a jolt that has me moving this morning.

  1. That's pretty rad, man! It's so syncopated I thought it was in some oddball time signature, 17/8 or something, but no, it's a straight 4.

  2. If you like funked-up brassy break-downs, see also: Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Soul Jazz Orchestra.

If it wasn't for the arts, I think I would write off the last decade.
