The Earl of Detroit
Automotive design has become so horrendous that anything just a notch above the blob-shaped crud (like the Audi TT, the new Beetle, the new Thunderbird, and the PT Crusier) is praised as revolutionary and beautiful. Read about one of the last men in Detroit who understood what American cars were supposed to be about, designer Harley Earl.

My Acid Trip with Groucho
Paul Krassner's deleriously meandering and delightful account of his LSD experience with Groucho Marx. "We had long periods of silence and of listening to music. I was accustomed to playing rock 'n' roll while tripping, but the record collection here was all classical and Broadway show albums. After we heard the Bach "Cantata No. 7 Groucho said, "I may be Jewish, but I was seeing the most beautiful visions of Gothic cathedrals. Do you think Bach knew he was doing that?"

Henry Darger: The Unreality of Being
"Amid a thick accumulation of debris - including hundreds of Pepto Bismol bottles, nearly a thousand balls of string, old newspapers, magazines and comic books, religious kitsch and much more - Henry Darger's landlord, the photographer Nathan Lerner, found a creative life's work: and enormous literary and pictorial production. The key element was a picaresque tale in twelve massive volumes composed of some 19,000 pages of legal-sized paper filled with single- spaced typing entitled The story of the Vivian Girls, in what is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion."

Human oddities fade from modern fairs
"Mr. Rodgers lives in Gibsonton, Fla., a town known for its retirement community of sideshow performers. A member of the International Independent Showmen's Association, he has befriended many of the town's retirees, including Melvin Burkhart the Human Blockhead and Percilla the Monkey Girl. 'I hate to see all of that go,' Mr. Rodgers said. 'It was really a novelty to see them. It was very colorful and entertaining.'"
