Musopen, a charity dedicated to making music available online for free is using Kickstarter for an ambitious project to record and release into the public domain the symphonies of Beethoven, Brahms, Sibelius, and Tchaikovsky. They are currently at about $9000, towards an $11000 goal, with less than 3 weeks to go. I think it's a great project; I've already pledged.

I also pledged and think it this will be a great tool for filmmakers who are looking for great music for their projects, but don't have the capital to license previous symphony recordings.
