Love and Lots of Sugar has documented some of the creation of a remarkable Captain America fourth birthday cake that, in cross section, displayed the stars-n-stripes. It's a really sweet bit of topology-based baking, and, judging by the photos, was a smash-hit.
The last picture I posted hit it big on Reddit. Some really nice things have been said.

Mark sez, "My amazing and beautiful wife arranged had an R2D2 cake made for my 40th birthday. It was made by Stacked Cakes which is located in a small country town 20 kilometres outside Canberra in Australia. The link is to their log where there are photos and video of it being made."
They also include downloadable templates for making your own R2D2 monstercake.

Oakleaf Cakes, creator of the life-sized Stormtrooper cake we featured yesterday, have a post up detailing the fella's construction, right down to his rice krispie skeleton.
The building of the Stormtrooper cake was an epic event in and of itself. It took our entire wonderful crew of ten people two full weeks of to put this guy together (although the cake wasn’t added until 2 days before it was to be served). Along the way we even had to invent completely new cake making methods so it could be put together modularly onsite, hold its fondant over long vertical stretches, and stand on two beautifully sculpted Rice Kripsy legs that supported his 300 lb body –all while keeping every bit of cake tasting light, fluffy, and delicious!
We built a life-size Stormtrooper and he was delicious.

Chef David Lowery created this "Cherpumple" -- a "dessert version of the turducken," composed of "CHERry, PUMpkin and apPLE pie," baked into three separate cakes, then assembled into an enormous layer cake.
Working in the Grand Geneva Resort pastry kitchen, I had some time to make a Cherpumple and serve it at Sunday Brunch. My Cherpumple weighed 21 lbs 10 oz and was seen by over 200 guests that Sunday. I was very pleased that it stayed standing until the final 1/8 was cut 4 hours after the first slice was taken. Will be doing this again.
