It might be a side-effect of domestication — i.e., when you select for less-aggressive animals you get ones that tend to bark. Or, it really might have meaning, both for other dogs and for humans. At Scientific American, Brian Hare and Vanessa Woods describe some of the research on dog communication, including studies that show both humans and dogs can tell the difference between barks associated with, say, food, and barks associated with the presence of a threatening stranger.

A sketchy guy was selling a darling Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in a NYC park. Kind-hearted Tena Cohen saw this and paid to get the super cute dog away from him! Scanning the pup's micro-chip helped her return the Ruby to its owners, who apparently missed it quite dramatically.

Stealing a Cavalier! Tsk.

Photographer, animal-lover, and Boing Boing reader heiney shares this photograph in our Boing Boing Flickr pool, and explains that this was a shot from the Animal Network Holiday Adoption Low Cost Vaccination/chip Photo Event at Ann Road Animal Hospital, Las Vegas NV.

"This was my first time shooting anything like this, I normally only shoot poochies for their Petfinder profiles," he says. "I thought it went pretty well, certainly learned a lot, for instance, perhaps an exam room at an animal hospital is not the most conducive environment for pets to feel their most calm & photogenic."

It looks like Rocco has been adopted! Other pets at this Las Vegas shelter are still looking for homes. Apparently there's a big pet abandonment/overpopulation problem in Vegas, even more so than in other US cities.

A thief caught on CCTV at a pet store made his escape by stuffing a $1,400 puppy down his pants.

Recorded by Zoo-Rama in Elmont, New York, footage shows the dog snatcher grabbing the pup out of a cage, stretching open his waistband, then shoving it into the darkness—start from about 5m in. Trapped inside his sweats, the Pomeranian writhes as its captor heads for the exit. If you know anything about the caper, the store owner has $500 for you.

Do you miss The Puppy Channel? Your wait for 24/7 canine-related programming may soon be at an end, thanks to DogTV.

After its debut two months ago in San Diego, the channel is available via the Internet and has plans for national distrubution. The conceit is that it's actually for dogs, writes Steve Gorman at Reuters:

The content is specifically tailored for four-legged audiences, with even the sound, colors and camera angles adjusted to make them more appealing to canines. The dogs' favorite TV stars, not surprisingly, turn out to be other dogs.

"They love watching other dogs being active on the screen, and other animals," said Beke Lubeach, head of marketing for DogTV, adding that birds, monkeys and zebras have proven popular as well.

According to their research, dogs also like harp music and SpongeBob SquarePants. [Reuters]

They both shed like crazy and the undercoat is a serious challenge with the Chow. This grooming tool takes care of the undercoat like nothing I've ever used. It's also apparently less painful for the dogs, as it doesn't have the tendency to dig straight in like the previously reviewed Furminator, which I liked well enough before trying this one.

I have the 16-blade version. It gets down deep and pulls the undercoat and dander OUT. The blades are much more robust than the Furminator, and there's no chance of bending. It's a VERY well-built device, and the rubber handle looks weird but feels good in the hand. I can't think of a single improvement I'd make.

I will say that the first time you use this tool, try not to be too ambitious. It took three or four sessions with my chow (an outside dog, and it had been awhile) before I got all the lumps of undercoat off him. Not because the tool was rough with him, but just that he had so much to remove. The Corgi was done in one session, and despite her shorter hair, this tool removed a huge volume of fur. Her haunches are very thick, but this tool goes right through it without the tearing I'd been so careful to avoid with the Furminator.

Now, both my dogs love this thing. When I'm working on one, the other dog comes up to pester me so he gets a turn. Once the major de-undercoating is done, it's a simple matter to use this weekly or as-needed to keep things fluffy. Both dogs really look forward to their grooming.

I've been to a cat cafe, but wonder if any Boing Boing readers (perhaps some of you in Korea) have ever visited an establishment that caters to canine preferences?
