In his bizzarre 1976 short film, Girl Chewing Gum (above), John Smith aimed a camera at a busy East London street corner and "directed" the living scene, as if the passers-by, vehicles and birds were waiting out of shot for instructions. Heather and I recently found ourselves at the same corner in Dalston and decided to shoot a quick tribute (below). In the intervening decades. everything there has changed--and, of course, nothing at all.
