The good people at London's Nobrow Press have done an 8" vinyl toy for the outstanding kids' comic Hilda, created by Luke Pearson (reviews: Book 0, Book 1; Book 2). The Hilda toy is grownup-collector-expensive, but it's also a very nice piece -- I saw one in person last night when I brought my daughter and her friend to the Nobrow store on the way to our weekly daddy-daughter pizza dinner.

American Girl dolls: from adventure heroes to helicopter-parented, sheltered junior spa-bunnies

Writing in The Atlantic, Amy Schiller documents how Mattel has spent the past 15 years transforming the expensive, highly detailed American Girl dolls from a source of radical inspiration that signposted moments in the history of the struggles for justice and equality in the US, into posh upper-middle-class girls who raise money for bake sales. As Lenore Skenazy points out, the original American Girls were children who had wild adventures without adult oversight; the new crop are helicopter-parented and sheltered, and their idea of high adventure is a closely supervised day in the snow.

Saige is white and upper-middle-class, just like McKenna the gymnast and Lanie the amateur gardener and butterfly enthusiast, both previous Girls of the Year. Even in their attempt to encourage spunky and active girlhoods, their approaches to problem solving are highly local—one has a bake sale to help save the arts program in a local school, another scores a victory for the organic food movement when she persuades a neighbor to stop using pesticides.
By contrast, the original dolls confronted some of the most heated issues of their respective times. In the book A Lesson for Samantha, she wins an essay contest at her elite academy with a pro-manufacturing message, but after conversations with Nellie, her best friend from a destitute background who has younger siblings working in brutal factory jobs, Samantha reverses course and ends us giving a speech against child labor in factories at the award ceremony. Given the class divide, Samantha's speech presumably takes place in front of the very industrial barons responsible for those factory conditions. The book is a bravura effort at teaching young girls about class privilege, speaking truth to power, and engaging with controversial social policy, all based on empathetic encounters with people whose life experiences differ from her own.

Kaitan modded his 3D printed Makie doll into a spectacular intergalactic jewel-thief, complete with accessories.

She was dyed using a mixture of green and yellow iDye poly. Her face up/ body up (?) was done with Perfect pearls iridescent powders, pastels, fine glitter and acrylic paint. The scaly pattern covers her arms,legs and torso as well as her head. She was going to have bright red hair, but I decided I like her bald! smile
Sorry she's a bit “fur coat and no knickers” at the moment - I haven't gotten around to making her other clothes yet smile
Her shoes are painted Makielab black wedges with additional jewels. And of course she gets her own fabulous personalised gun

The latest issue of Make: has a great profile of my wife, Alice Taylor, and the 3D printed toy-company she founded. They're going great guns, too -- just won one of the top prizes at the SXSW Accelerator!

Makies are manufactured using a 3D printing technology called selective laser sintering (SLS), in which a laser fuses together particles of nylon powder to form the individual parts. The process can produce items with very high fidelity and strength, compared with the more common fused deposition modelling process (FDM), often used in desktop 3D printers, where a filament of plastic is extruded to build up a model in layers.
The downside of this process is price, with SLS machines costing an order of magnitude more than their FDM cousins. Nevertheless, SLS technology could be described as just-about-affordable, and Makies are a perfect application for consumer-quality 3D printing. Digitally designed, and each one unique, Makies are a sign today of a much-talked-about future trend in manufacturing: mass-customisation.
“We set out to make consumer-facing goods using 3D printing. The original vision was: virtual goods would produce physical goods; the physical goods you would be able to modify, and that would feed back into the virtual world. That would create a kind of loop between digital and physical. The only way you can do that is with a digital thing that also lives as a physical thing, connected with an identity. The traditional technology for manufacturing toys makes it hard. 3D printing technology makes it possible.”
So 3D printing makes personalised dolls possible. And personalisation is what makes a Makie special.

Reversible Hello Kitty Hamburger

Like I mentioned in the Blooming Flower post, I'm headed home with a suitcase full of dirty laundry and toys for my five year old. Another awesome score from this trip is the Hello Kitty Reversible 8" Plush: Hamburger, a plush Hello Kitty toy that inverts and forms a Hello Kitty hamburger. It's a thing, then it's another thing! (And there's a turkey version, too).

This thing is pretty spectacular in person. I bought it on recommendation of a nice sales clerk at Austin, TX's Toy Joy, where you can buy bats by the scoopful marvel at the Spider Duck.

If you're headed to SXSW, you should really get all your friends in a taxi and ride out to Toy Joy and then eat some of the spectacular barbecue at Ruby's BBQ, kitty-corner from the shop. It's pretty much the perfect outing, and at least as cool (if not cooler) than anything you'll actually see presented on the conference floor.

Toy "blooming flower" uses nested, dyed fans of tissue paper to surprise, delight

As I get ready to (finally) return home from a month-long tour, I'm taking stock of the gifts I scored for my daughter Poesy on the road. First up is this Toysmith Blooming Flower an incredibly clever little papercraft toy. It consists of a complex of folded and cut tissue paper, sandwiched between two plastic rods. When you open out these rods, the tissue paper fans out to make a lovely paper flower.

But that's just for starters. If you give the flower a shake, it "blooms," as other paper fans, in contrasting colors, emerge from the insides of the first-order flower. Each shake or sharp tap creates a new structure, each more lovely than the last. It's difficult to explain, but itsmecharlee posted the above YouTube video in which a charming little girl masterfully demonstrates.

This is the second time I've brought these home (I discovered them thanks to a tip from Bettina Neuefeind, who sent me to the amazing Black Ink, near Harvard Square in Cambridge, Mass). The first one lasted for more than a month, which is pretty good for a mess of fragile, glued-together tissue paper in the hands of a then-four-year-old. They're only $4, and the kid is five now, so this time I'm bringing home two. They're really lovely and cool.

Tickle Me Elmo frozen in carbonite

Todd Blatt and the fun-loving weirdos at the Baltimore Node hackerspace froze a Tickle-Me-Elmo in carbonite because of (awesome) reasons:

I was at my hackerspace one evening and we got to talking about crazy ideas, like normal. We have a full size Han Solo in Carbonite at the space, and someone mentioned that it'd be funny to encase old toys in a smaller carbonite box. So I did. I used the ShopBot CNC router at the MIT FablLab at CCBC in Catonsville, MD to cut the box, an arduino to copy code to an attiny85 to run the randomization script for the LED lights, and my MakerBot to 3d print the side panels I'd previously designed for a different project. The side panels are posted here on Thingiverse and I just drilled out holes for the lights.

Autodesk's 123D Creature lets you design and order 3D prints of monsters you design

Autodesk's 123D Creature is an iPad app that lets you design a monster and then order a 3D print for home delivery. The app costs $2 and I just bought it. Looking forward to trying it out with Jane tonight!

Create a skeleton
Add joints and create limbs to build up your 3D character in digital clay. Reposition, pose, and scale limbs; and adjust your creature's shape.

Decorate
Add surface details using the sculpting tools, then use the airbrush to paint on color or use image paint add realistic details by to rubbing areas of a photo onto your 3D creature.

Export and share
Bring your 3D creature into the render room to generate amazing images to share with your friends. Use the in-app printing service to order a 3D print of your creature, or export your 3D model complete with textures.

Time to clear some space on the knick-knack shelf. Mezco has shown a line of AXE COP action figures at the NY Toy Fair:

Based on a webcomic that turned into a print comic that turned into a web based animation that turned into an animated tv show soon to be on Fox, Axe cop features some of the most outlandish characters ever seen. How outlandish? Well, besides the titular axe wielding cop, there is a t-rex with machine gun arms, an avacado unicorn, and soldiers made of poo. Mezco’s Drake indicated that Mezco has a long history of producing poo based characters and with their Mr Hanky of South Park they have cornered the poo toy market. “No other toy company besides Mezco will be offering three separate poo based characters in 2013 “ said Drake. Mezco will be producing both 3.75 inch figures and plush characters for the series.

RealAbsurdity's "Modular Snap-Fit Airship" on Thingiverse is a 3D-printable toy whose parts can interchangeably form part of a Saturn V rocket. More snap-fit vehicles are planned.

This is a fully modular snap-fit (no glue required) model of an Airship. It is the vanilla base for a series of absurd mashups that currently includes a Trireme and a Saturn V rocket. Designed for 3D print, it comes in two flavors: solid and shell.

Makies are the custom, 3D printed dolls that come from MakieLab, the company my wife Alice founded. The first couple revs of the doll were all bone white, due to limitations of the high-wearing, kid-safe plastics. But after a lot of R&D, the Makies have figured out how to do color, starting from today:

One of the most bizarre items I found was a water pistol in the shape of Adam West as Batman. The squirt trigger is in an inappropriate place, and the place where you put water in would be equally inappropriate. He’s actually bending over, and water squirts out of his mouth. And well, you can do the rest of the math.

Petition to make gender-neutral Easy-Bake Ovens

Mckenna Pope of Garfield, NJ has started a petition -- with just over 23,000 signatures at time of writing (including mine) -- to Hasbro, asking them to produce a gender-neutral version of the Easy-Bake Oven, so that her cooking-crazed little brother won't feel excluded from his passions:

My little brother has always loved cooking. Being in the kitchen is his favorite out of school activity, and he yearns to have the opportunity to cook on his own, or at least with limited help.
Imagine my surprise when I walked into his room to find him "cooking" tortillas by placing them on top of his lamp's light bulb! Obviously, this is not a very safe way for him to be a chef, so when he asked Santa for his very own Easy-Bake Ultimate Oven, produced by the Hasbro company, for me to help him be the cook he's always wanted to be, my parents and I were immediately convinced it was the truly perfect present.
However, we soon found it quite appalling that boys are not featured in packaging or promotional materials for Easy Bake Ovens -- this toy my brother's always dreamed about. And the oven comes in gender-specific hues: purple and pink.
I feel that this sends a clear message: women cook, men work.

Mark has previously written about the Fujitsu ScanSnap, a high-accuracy, high-speed device that's perfect for scanning receipts and bills. I knew the ScanSnap had a cult-like following as a tool to reduce paper cruft around the home and office, and that many swear by its power as a personal organization and productivity enabler. Frothy warm milk for coffee drinks, hot chocolate, and chai is one of the greatest joys of winter. If you don't have a fancy espresso machine with a milk steamer attachment, the Capresso FrothPro is pretty great, and only about $50. I use raw cacao powder, almond milk, and a little vanilla and agave for my go-to holiday beverage treat: throw all of those ingredients in, hit a button, come back a couple minutes later and you're in business. I've given a few as gifts before, and the recipients love and use them.

There are many, many models of rice cookers and slow cookers to choose from, "smart" and simple alike, but I love VitaClay for the one thing that sets its programmable electric multi-function cookers apart: a clay pot. Instead of non-stick coating over aluminum, which is more common but associated for some with health concerns, the Vita-Clay cooking vessel is, as the name suggests, just pure red clay. Non-stick coatings and aluminum may or may not pose health risks, I don't know. But there's something really pleasing about cooking grains, beans, and stews in a vessel made from the earth itself.

My mother, Monica Rumsey, edited this 2012 title from the Toledo Museum of Art—-a museum that houses a hefty collection of glass from ancient times to the most avant-garde stuff being produced today. My mom says, "This is a luxe 'coffee-table' book that has more than 100 color plates, all reproduced in vivid color and destined to change the way we tend to think of glass. In my humble opinion, this is not the glass we deal with every day, those clear transparent vessels that serve up things to drink, or the flat panes we see and touch in our many electronic devices, or the windows in our homes, offices, stores, or modes of transport. These are works of Vulcanic genius, from the gods of amazement who, in the days of myth and magic, gave us lightning and thunder. Forks Over Knives, the cookbook

The 2011 documentary film "Forks over Knives" argued that "most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods," and advocates a whole-foods, plant diet. Whether or not you believe in the dogma (I think the science is trickier than the film suggests), there is plenty of evidence that unprocessed plant-based foods without dairy, meat, or added oils are nutritious. This cookbook also proves they can be delicious and enjoyable. It contains 300 recipes with "wholesome fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes," including "classic and unexpected, globally and seasonally inspired, and for every meal of the day, all through the year."

The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen

The name suggests this cookbook is all about cancer prevention, but that's not the case. It was for me a road map and bible during my cancer treatment, to better understand how chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation change our experience of taste and smell, and how to accommodate changing nutritional needs and aversion to food during treatment. If you or someone you love is going through cancer treatment, buy this book. The recipes are great, but most valuable of all for me (and the people cooking for me for all those months when I was too weak) was the explainer on how our perception of flavor is warped by chemo.

You can't buy a better juicer for $220. I wrote an extensive review here. This is my favorite kitchen gadget, and was essential during my cancer treatment—and the long road of recovery I'm now on. Fruit and veggie juices are easy to extract and clean up is a breeze. The device can also be used to make nut butters, pasta, and can be used to mash ingredients for baby food or in ingredient prep.

A beautiful memoir by New York Times writer John Schwartz, the dad of a gay teen son, which offers an instructive story for families of LGBTQ kids. Three years ago, John got the phone call every parent hopes never to receive: "his thirteen-year-old son, Joe, was in the hospital following a failed suicide attempt. After mustering the courage to come out to his classmates, Joe’s disclosure — delivered in a tirade about homophobic attitudes—was greeted with dismay and confusion by his fellow students. Hours later, he took an overdose of pills." Oddly Normal chronicles all that followed, through to the present day, interweaving the family's narrative with questions common for families of LGBTQ kids, like, "Are effeminate boys and tomboy girls necessarily gay? Is there a relationship between being gay and suicide or mental illness? Should a child be pushed into coming out?" Parents, relatives, teachers, and counselors can all benefit from the book.

The Tri-State Gang in Richmond: Murder and Robbery in the Great Depression

A Great Depression historic thriller, set in my home town of Richmond, VA, and edited by my mom! During the lawless Prohibition era of the 1930s, a group of criminals called the Tri-State Gang emerged from Philadelphia and spread murder and mayhem south through Baltimore to Richmond, "wreaking bloody havoc and brutally eliminating those who knew too much about their heists." Once known as the "Dillingers of the East," Robert Mais and Walter Legenza led their "men and molls" on a violent journey of robberies, murders, and escapes up and down the East Coast. Historian Selden Richardson, who has an odd personal connection to the story, recounts their bloody tales in a gripping, can't-put-it-down, rigorously documented history book that really, really needs to be made into a movie.

Breaking Bad, Seasons 1-5

Breaking Bad is the best TV show ever in the history of TV, and if you disagree with me you either haven't watched it or you are a big dummy. I was already a fan before my cancer diagnosis, but watched and re-watched all five seasons during my treatment and found a new appreciation for how perfectly the show nails the experience of being a person with cancer. No, not all of us will morph into meth-cooking sociopaths (though the idea has come to mind as my medical bills stack up), but many of the nuances in Walter White ring familiar, right down to the can of ginger ale in the fridge to ward off chemo nausea. Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti (Throbbing Gristle) and Nick Void (Factory Floor) created this collaboration for the Short Circuit presents Mute festival at the Roundhouse London in May 2011. "Outside of the trio, these recordings were unheard prior to the festival and the popularity of the performance left many being turned away at the door," but they are now preserved for you here.

A Prime membership is great for buying fun stuff, but can also be a really practical tool for elderly, disabled, or otherwise incapacitated people (like I was during treatment). Amazon does not currently offer a way to "gift" Prime Membership, and Amazon gift certificates can't be used toward membership. One workaround: buy the person you'd like to Prime a prepaid Visa or Mastercard at your local grocery or drugstore, make it for $79, and give it to them with a card explaining what it's for. Alternately, plain-old Amazon gift cards are awesome.

$375 might seem like a lot to spend on a blender, until you try a Vitamix. Smoothies, flours, quick breads, dips and dressings, nut butters, soups, ice cream, raw vegan foods, mixed drinks—man, you can prepare so many wonderful things with this durable device. It just works. I own an earlier, cheaper model of the Vitamix, and am absolutely delighted. You do not have to get the absolute latest and highest-end model to be satisfied. Do, however, buy the dry mix container so you can grind your own flour (the wet mix container is for smoothies and liquids; you can't grind dry things in that one).

Except for The Jerk, because that was movie stuff and not television stuff. But watch this with this in mind: Steve Martin is a philosophy guy. Who plays the banjo. Do we have anyone else like him on the planet? I think not. Also recommended: Martin's spectacular book about his standup career, Born Standing Up.

The best consumer point-and-shoot camera by a country mile, even Canon's popular S110 doesn't come close. A large sensor and the f1.8 Zeiss lens offer greater depth of field and superior low-light performance, while the tiny body slots in a shirt pocket. At $600 or thereabouts, though, it is not cheap.

Sony RX1

Leica users will think that the RX1 is a bargain; after all, it's a point-and-shoot camera with a full-frame sensor. At $2,800, though, Sony's little miracle remains well out of reach for everyday mortals. Just out this month, be sure to wait for a consensus from reviews before eBaying the M9.

Blackmagic Cinema Camera

Want to make a movie? At $2,500, Blackmagic's Cinema Camera is more expensive than an entry-level DSLR body, and you'll still need to factor in the cost of lenses, solid-state storage and other essentials. But with RAW shooting, 13 stops of dynamic range and a 5" integrated LCD monitor, it nails the cine style without any of the hacks and compromises, save one: some reviewers knock its relatively small sensor. Sony's got a full-frame interchangeable-lens camcorder out for $3,300, but it lacks the BCC's pro features.

The Chinese launch of Barbie has crashed and burned, after the multi-million-dollar Barbie flagship store in Shanghai's most fashionable district had to close its doors for lack of business after just two years. Here's Ken Voigt from CNN with an expert's postmortem:

"Barbie spent a lot of money setting up a boutique in the most fashionable part of Shanghai, where you could go and have all of your Barbie needs met. You could have a fashion consultation, you could of course buy lots of Barbie dolls," said Karl Gerth, author of "As China Goes, So Goes the World: How Chinese Consumers Are Transforming Everything."
However, "they didn't think long and hard enough about whether Chinese girls wanted to look sexy or they wanted to look something closer to what you'd associate with Japan -- cute," Gerth added. "So Hello Kitty is doing well, but Barbie is an example of crash and burn."
