Rampaging elephants plague villagers in some parts of India, where a elephant stampedes brought on by deforestation can wipe out buildings and kill indiscriminately. Luckily elephants are averse to the aroma of spicy chillies, so wildlife experts in Assam have invented "chilli bombs" that give off chilli fumes and sound loud bells when activated by elephants who cross tripwires placed around the vulnerable villages.
"If this works… we will install these tripwires and encourage villagers to use the chilli bombs elsewhere in the state".
She said elephants cannot stand some pungent chilli varieties available in Assam, so chilli smoke bombs and ropes smeared with chillies may keep the elephants away .
