Katrina communications aid: 10,000 radios needed

Sascha Meinrath, one of the organizers coordinating a large-scale volunteer effort to re-establish wireless voice and data connectivity for areas cut off by Katrina, says:

Just a quick note — the folks setting up the LPFM station at the Astrodome need a donation of 10,000 radios (and the batteries to run them).

This is a perfect opportunity for a corporation that wants to step forward to do so.

The Low-Power FM station is fully dedicated to aiding evacuees, but the authorities say that the station needs to have the radios before they can go on-air.

Update: Boing Boing pals Jake Appelbaum and Joel Johnson are headed to the area to assist with the CU Wireless project. Here are posts on their blogs with details on gear they're seeking — including stuff for the DirectNIC guys, the last operating ISP in New Orleans who run that NOLA survivor blog you've been reading.

Joel's list of gear needs, here's the blog where Jake will be documenting their trip.

Update: A buyer for those 10,000 radios has stepped forward! But, now there are new challenges. Details here.
