David Carr's epic piece in the New York Times today on the reckless, misogynist culture that flourished at Tribune newspapers under Sam Zell and cohorts is a must-read. Carr documents arrogant frat-boy hijinks and wasteful, greedy actions of higher-ups, all of which led to deeper and deeper bankruptcy—cultural and financial. Reading this piece, I kept thinking: What bullshit, blaming the internet for the decline of traditional print media. Good old media baron fatcats do the job just fine. Hard-working news reporters deserve better. As do the people who read, and rely on, these great American institutions.
