In 2009, two scientists took biogeography—the study of how species are geographically distributed—and tried to apply it to the hunt for Osama bin Laden. Using a couple of key theories, they speculated that the al-Qaeda leader was probably holed up in the Pakistani border town of Parachinar. Turns out, they were off by about 278 miles.
