General Martin Dempsey, the military's top officer who chairs the Joint Chiefs, told the Senate Armed Services Committee he would recommend sending U.S. ground troops to assist Iraqi and Kurdish forces if he believes it necessary.

"If we reach the point where I believe our advisors should accompany Iraqi troops on attacks against specific ISIL targets, I'll recommend that to the president," he said.

Sending U.S. troops to fight with Iraqi soldiers against Islamic State soldiers would directly contradict what President Obama has repeatedly promised: no ground troops this time.
