'Chase Me,' a '3D-printed film' by Gilles Deschaud

A film by Gilles-Alexandre Deschaud that "follows a ukelele-playing girl who is chased through a dark forest by the monster that emerges from her own shadow."

From the filmmaker:

Filmmaker Gilles-Alexandre Deschaud spent two years 3D printing 2,500 parts to create each frame of the film. From the characters to the set, all elements were printed using the Formlabs' Form 1+ SLA 3D Printer. Each precise detail comes together to form a beautiful representation of a magical world.

The project first began as a CG-animated storyboard, which was then 3D printed — frame by frame. Each second of the film is made up of 15 frames. The elements in each scene was printed at 100 micron resolution, with minimal finishing beyond the removal of support material.

For the wide camera shots, the filmmaker printed out a girl measuring 3 cm tall, and switched to a 7 cm model for close-ups. The set was printed in multiple parts that were combined to make the larger objects. For instance, the giant tree was printed in 22 individual prints on the Form 1+. Smaller, animated parts of the set, such as the growing tree and the waterfall were modeled and printed for each specific still to illustrate movement.

"Chase Me is a story about embracing your fears, and turning them, instead, into something beautiful," says Gilles-Alexandre.
