The Nebula Awards — voted on by members of the Science Fiction Writers of America to recognize excellence in science fiction and fantasy — were given out in Chicago yesterday, and every prose award went to a woman (the film award went to the writers of feminist action film Mad Max: Fury Road).
Best novel went to copyfighter Naomi Novik for Uprooted and best YA novel went to Fran Wilde for Updraft.
The short fiction prizes, too, were all given to women: best novella went to Akata Witch author Nnedi Okorafor for Binti; best novelette went to Sarah Pinsker for "Our Lady of the Open Road" and best short story went to Alyssa Wong for Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers, a very promising new writer whom I had the pleasure of teaching at the Clarion Workshop.
