Wayne Welsh, assistant police chief in Estherwood, La., posted a cartoon to social media depicting a mother holding a young girl under water with the caption "When your daughters(sic) first crush is a negro boy." KATC reports that he at first defended his posting in the initial outcry, but will lose his job all the same.
"It's not against the law to share something on Facebook. It's social media. Internet," he posted.
"I shared somebody else's posts and everybody mad at me again," he wrote. "So Facebook police mad at me."
He also posted about the "race card" and how people want to say he's a "bad guy."
Some media describe the following as an "apology," but even by the well-worn standards of non-apologies, it's obviously just another sullen "fuck you" to critics.
"Well, I posted something on Facebook that made a lot of people mad," he wrote. "Well, I'm sorry for what happen. Ya have a blessed day."
The city isn't firing him, insisting that it can't, but they "expect" him to turn in his resignation.
