In 2013, San Francisco artist Jason Mecier (pronounced: "Mess-Ear") was commissioned by Hugh Hefner's third wife Crystal to create this portrait for her hubby's 87th birthday. The mosaic likeness of the Playboy's recently-deceased head honcho is created with his own "junk," items like swatches of his retired red silk pajamas, baby oil, select covers, words and headlines grabbed from Playboy magazines, unopened sleeves of condoms, a tin of Velvet pipe tobacco, small bottles of Jack Daniels whiskey, and various Playboy Bunny ephemera.
The piece is part of Mecier's ongoing and much-lauded "Celebrity Junk Drawer" series and it's currently hanging in the dining room at the Playboy Mansion. In 2014, it landed a cameo in this Pitbull video.

Julien’s Auctions is running a large auction of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner’s stuff, including several pairs of his pajamas, board games, a pipe, and this sharp smoking jacket. Described as “a scarlet silk damask smoking jacket with shawl collar and self-tie belt closure,” the high estimate is $5,000 but I bet it goes for much […]
In January, we let you know that Playboy had sued us. On Valentine’s Day, a court tossed their ridiculous complaint out, skeptical that Playboy could even amend it. Playboy didn’t bother to try. We are grateful this is over. We are grateful for the wonderful work of the EFF, Durie Tangri, and Blurry Edge, our […]

There’s no shortage of stories about the benefits of cannabidiol, that benign (and non-psychoactive) cousin of THC. Some have been using it for years to deal with pain, stress, and sleeplessness. And the more people use it, the more discussion there is about how to use it. While there’s no shortage of quality edibles on […]
Are we done with capsule coffee makers yet? Sure, they’re easy. But they are not so easy on the environment, and it’s debatable whether they actually make a better cup. Luckily, there’s never been a better time to switch back to the good old reliable drip method – especially when drip coffeemakers have quietly been […]
If there’s one thing that stayed consistent through the last decade or so of tech industry turmoil, it’s the love affair between techies and Linux. There’s just a ton you can do with the OS, and its open-source format means you can customize your rig from the ground up. Apparently not content with that level […]
