Shops dedicated to modelmaking have long been a gateway drug to art culture and maker culture for young people. My dad loved model trains, but I was not so much into that. I did love making landscapes of lichen trees, painted foam mountains, and rivers made of melted wax. Modelmaking teaches attention to detail, how to read diagrams and instructions, and how to improvise.
