The Chinese slang term jingfen means "spiritually Finnish." It was coined thanks to the popularity of an online comic called Finnish Nightmares. Liang Chenyu speculates why so many Chinese millennials identify with the comic.
Children who grew up under the one-child policy got used to a certain amount of isolation, which contrasts with how they are expected to be socialized, especially in crowded cities. As Chen Si told Sixth Tone:
Finnish social norms are primarily a product of the country’s low population density, Chen says: “You don’t expect someone to sit beside you if there are other seats available.”
The creator of “Finnish Nightmares,” artist Karoliina Korhonen, says she is surprised by its popularity among Chinese millennials. “I thought Chinese people might be used to crowded places,” she writes in an email reply to Sixth Tone.
Korhonen thinks jingfen is a fantastic buzzword. “I said once that everyone can have a little bit of [the comic's protagonist] Matti in them, regardless of where they are from,” she adds.

In 1975, Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge seized power in Cambodia after expelling a US puppet regime, surviving a brutal US bombing campaign despite the massive asymmetry between the Cambodian forces and the US military. Tian Veasna was born three days after the Khmer Rouge took power, and spent his formative years in forced labor camps as his family were beaten, starved, tortured and murdered. Today, Veasna is a comics creator living in France, and in Year of the Rabbit, Veasna creates a coherent story out of his family's narratives, giving us a ground-level view of the horrors of the Pol Pot regime, whose campaign of genocide led to the deaths of more than a million people.

My buddy Dave Ganjamie and I have been collaborating on comics for a few years now. Not all of our brainstorm-and-sketch sessions end somewhere exciting, but we did have one fun idea that came to fruition. It was the fall of 2013, and Dave half-jokingly challenged me to write him a — his words, and […]
You hear the stories all the time. You know the ones about how a new vehicle instantly loses hundreds, even thousands of dollars in value the second a new owner drives it off the lot. Depreciation is a killer, especially when the item itself works just as well — or maybe even better than all […]

Quality knives matter — and in more ways than you might expect. At the most basic level, having a functioning set of proper kitchen knives means you can actually get in a kitchen, start putting together a meal and have the right tools to handle all tasks. From the blunt force of the clever to […]
