Sculptor Art Donovan (previously) writes in about "Event Horizon," his newest lamp, inspired by black holes.
Two weeks ago, I had finished this design called, "Event Horizon" to find that the subject of Black Holes and that incredible, historic image was all over the news last week. My own "E.V." was inspired by both my NASA experience and also the 2014 Christopher Nolan film, "Interstellar". That film's beautiful vision of the fictional Black Hole, "Gargantua" was dramatically and accurately rendered courtesy of Nobel Prize winning astrophysicist, Prof. Kip Thorne. Yesterday, physicists claimed that Gargantua is remarkably similar to that actual image published yesterday by the Event Horizon Telescope.
Now the specs: the "Event Horizon stands 24" tall and scratch-built from solid maple, bronze, brass and glass.
The globe bulb is obscured front and back by a circular "veils" of bronze and the light echoes back and forth in the gold and glass reflections. An orbital kind of movement is nicely implied by the shield's different diameters and materials- Solid bronze on top and a hexagonal brass mesh in front. A forward trajectory pierces the glass globe like an arrow.
Smoked gray maple. 24K plated brass and bronze. One-Of-A-Kind!

Two years ago, I informed you of the fully-functional golden toilet created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, then available for use at the Guggenheim. The installation, currently on tour, was stolen last night from Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire. One man was arrested; police are hunting for the rest of the gang—and for the precious pissoir. […]
david.li/paint is a spectacularly gloopy painting app online. You can set paint fluidity, bristle count and brush size, and of course pick any color you like. What I like about it (as opposed to pro apps like Corel Painter or Artrage that offer similar natural media simulations) is that it’s just a loaded messy brush […]
After Suzanne Forbes graduated from art school, she worked as a penciller for DC and a courtroom artist for CBS and CNN; today, she lives in Berlin, where she is a prolific "documentary artist," rendering scenes from the U-bahn, sex parties, and other scenes around town. They're Creative Commons (NC-ND) licensed, and supported by donors […]
On the one hand, nostalgia is “a corruption of the historical impulse,” according to William Gibson. On the other hand, “Super Mario Bros.” will never not be cool. Luckily, there’s a way to satisfy that retro gaming while still keeping an eye on the future: The GameShell Kit. This thing is simultaneously the last handheld […]
The field of data analytics can get intimidating, even for business professionals who constantly rely on it. But at its heart, its purpose is to simplify. To take mounds of information and distill their insights into a single clear picture. Currently, the go-to software for painting that picture is Tableau. And if you want to […]
If you’re in the market for a stable, durable camera fully suited for first-person video, there’s a good chance that you’re the adventurous type. So why settle on a familiar name like GoPro? The DJI Osmo Action 4K HDR Camera checks off all the same boxes on the action cam checklist as the GoPro 4K […]
