The Inverter is a kickstarted, sub-$500, 34mm automatic mechanical watch built around Citizen's Miyota Calibre 9000 movement, augmented with a custom module that makes the watch run backwards, so that it can be mounted so that the movement is exposed (beneath a sapphire crystal), with the back of the watch becoming its "face."
It's the kind of high-end novelty watch that normally sells as a super-luxe item for $20K and the team behind it, the folks from Watchismo (previously) have a long track record of building excellent timepieces (and fulfilling previous wristwatch crowdfunders).
This is a beautiful precision machine produced for no reason apart from the sheer aesthetic joy of exposing a complex and ingenious mechanism, and while $500 is a steep price for ornamentation, producing a watch to this spec at that price is actually a rather magnificent achievement.
The watch has lots of nice gracenotes, like an easily-swapped band, 3ATM of water-resistance, a selection of colors and a super luminous dial. Watches ship in November.
My grandfather was a watchmaker and I grew up playing with his movements, tools and workbench. Exposed movements are among my most favorite aesthetics, and I could watch them for hours.

You might remember that when I’m not blogging, I work with Fairyland. WELL… months before we were mandated to shelter in place, a local photographer, Stephen Loewinsohn, contacted our team at […]
We’ve been writing about Lea Redmond since 2009 here on Boing Boing. She’s just one of those kind of people who consistently makes neat things — a real Happy Mutant! Well, her latest creative venture is Home Sweet Home, an activity deck for kids (and the young at heart). It offers inspiring prompts for whimsical, […]
Listed at $159,900 this 1,075 square-foot home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is bland on the outside but features rooms with outer space, submarine, tropical island, and moonbase motifs. The owners put a lot of work into it!
When you think of the single program that seems to absolutely epitomize business in all its forms, you probably think of Microsoft Excel. It’s been around for three decades, it’s the cornerstone of the ubiquitous Microsoft Office suite and that neat, ordered grid of a spreadsheet is synonymous with 21st-century commerce. While many have Excel […]
You’d think the biggest complaint that can be leveled about a pair of earbuds is that they just don’t sound all that great. Granted, there are plenty of cut-rate headphones that fall under that category, but we’d wager the pet peeve that makes most users throw away earbuds in frustration is when they just don’t […]
