The City of Santa Monica is looking to displace a year old homeless feeding program because it is too successful.
Steve Petramale has been feeding at least 100 homeless people every week at Reed Park for more than a year.
Santa Monica officials told Petramale the park is not a good location for his food program. They had threatened to issue a citation if he served meals this Sunday.
Petramale says he's willing to work with the city to find a new location, but he wants to make sure the meals continue.
"I'm more than willing to make this work so everyone is happy and especially that these people eat," he said. "That's my main concern."
Some neighborhood residents have complained.
"Neighbors are concerned about the amount of people, the lack of play space," said Alisa Orduna, an advisor on homelessness with the city of Santa Monica. "The lack of space to be able to stretch out and have their activities."
Petramale says he's sympathetic.
"I understand your concern and why you're upset but I really do feel, regardless, everyone needs to eat," he said.

I’ve been accused of being partial to Kewpie Mayonnaise because of its retro packaging, but that’s only somewhat true. It’s the best mayo I’ve ever had. Chalk it up to extra egg yolks and the MSG. It’s made in Japan, but you can buy a 3-pack on Amazon. If you are making okonomiyaki (crepes with […]
Is ‘breakfast’ macaroni & cheese a thing? What? Kraft says it’s a product coming in 2021, unless this is a grotesque food hoax I’ve somehow fallen for.
In much the same way that the toilet paper industry was overwhelmed by the coronavirus quarantine, so, too, is the agriculture industry dealing with a sudden and unexpected shift in their priorities. I suppose that makes sense; after all, what goes in must come out. Bloomberg has a short but interesting piece that looks at […]
From ordering from Amazon to paying bills over the web to something as simple as bottled water, we’re all hooked on modern convenience. We can’t help it. There are just too many modern world advances that save us too much time not to become a creature of comfort and go the easy route. Even if […]
No matter whether you go into the office or work from home, whether you roll out of bed at 5 a.m. or never get up before 9, we all agree a day can on how you feel first thing in the morning when you wake up. If you wake up feeling groggy or out of […]
The aluminum can is a great invention. And for 60 years, it and its crafty little addition, the pull tab, have made transporting and drinking all of our favorite beers, soft drinks and other beverages about 1,000 percent easier. Of course, evolution continues — and even an innovation as awesome as the aluminum can is […]
