Springtails are hexapods (not insects) that are approximately 2 to 12mm in length. They're incredible gymnasts thanks to their furcula, a forked appendage on the abdomen that springs out to launch the creatures into the air. Adrian Smith, an evolutionary biologist at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences & North Carolina State University, captured incredible super-slow motion video of springtails jumping off water.
