Google describes Project Starline as a "sort of magic window, and through that window, you see another person, life-size and in three dimensions… the effect is the feeling of a person sitting just across from you, like they are right there.

One of the reasons it looks so real is that each person is being scanned and 3D imaged. That model is compressed and sent over the network and shown on super high-resolution 3D display.
