Gov. Gavin Newsom easily wins California recall

Called by networks about an hour after polls closed in California, the recall election there failed to dethrone Governor Gavin Newsom. He holds about a 30-point lead the morning after, and while the total isn't expected to remain so lopsided as more ballots are counted, the result put a humiliating end to Republican challenger Larry Elder's bid to replace him. The margin was so wide Elder abandoned his efforts to claim the election was rigged and instead asked his voters to be "gracious in defeat" and cast himself as a Republican of national caliber. Newsom, for his part, took direct aim at former president Donald Trump.
