While Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D Printing has become accessible to the masses, the original approach utilizing paper or plastic/resin Stereo Lithography (SLA) machines from the 90's have merely become refined and enhanced with a wide gamut of materials and components. In the video below, CNC Kitchen discusses his 4-Axis 3D Printer built after meeting Michael Wüthrich and his team at The Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW – Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften), where The RotBot was created in the process of publishing their paper: A Novel Slicing Strategy to Print Overhangs without Support Material. With the addition of an extra axis, and multiple G-code slicing sessions from planar to conular and back to planar, it's possible to print specific shape types without the need for support materials.
