Raw milk recalled in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania's Department of Agriculture recommends consumers discard any Meadow View Jerseys brand raw milk they have since April: "Milk samples were tested and confirmed to be contaminated with Campylobacter after patients reported symptoms of campylobacteriosis after having consumed the products."

Milk was sold in glass half-gallon, and plastic half-gallon and gallon containers. Milk was sold at the farm's store in Leola and a number of retail stores in southcentral Pennsylvania.

Campylobacter is a bateria that gives you diarrhea, and is described as Europe's top cause of gastroenteritis.

Raw milk and its bacterial buddies are no stranger to wholesome American guts, and may be on the rise with Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert Kennedy Jr's advocacy of it. E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria are among the hazards, and children, the elderly, and pregnant women are particularly vulberable.

In 2024, raw milk from a small dairy farm in Minnesota was linked to an E. coli outbreak there. Earlier this year, listeria contamination led to a recall of raw milk in New York.

Though the farms in these cases follow state regulations regarding the sale of raw milk, the risks of unpasteurized dairy products are what they are.

It is important to note that raw milk does not provide the protection of pasteurization. Pasteurization is a process that heats milk to a specific temperature for a specific amount of time. Pasteurization kills the bacteria responsible for numerous illnesses and diseases such as listeriosis, salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, diphtheria, and brucellosis. Pasteurization of milk is recognized internationally as an effective means of preventing outbreaks of foodborne illnesses, including listeriosis.
