Devin Nunes loses legal battle with fictional cow

U.S. Representaive Devin Nunes (R-Tulare) has lost his legal battle to unmask a fictional cow on Twitter. Though the case made news of Nunes' narcissism, it was months before a judge could bring an end to his thin-skinned legal shenanigans. It was an exercise in censorship, in chilling criticism with the expensive prospect of defending even absurd lawsuits.

An interesting wrinkle: as the lawsuit suit named Twitter, its Section 230 immunity to defamation claims was how it rid itself of Nunes.

Judge John Marshall said in a decision Friday that Twitter was “immune from the defamation claims of” Nunes, R-Tulare, due to federal law that says social media companies are not liable for what people post on their platforms.

Specifically: "Judge Marshall [said] previous court cases had already settled that Section 230 applies even if the company does show bias in what content it allows people to post."

Conservatives have made a big shit sandwich out of believing Section 230 somehow means the opposite of this, and they will be eating it for years to come. Read the rest

Devin Nunes calls reporter a stalker for asking him a question

Rep. Devin Nunes' hand was shaking like a leaf while recording Intercept reporter Lee Fang politely asking a question about his role in investigating Hunter Biden. Nunes should learn about free and easy-to-use image stabilization software, like the kind used here:

Here's Fang's account of what happened:

The far right is dominating the information wars through "keyword signaling"

It's an old story: someone searches Google for a common keyword -- "jews," "women," "black people" -- and gets back a bunch of far-right conspiracist/genocidal garbage; Google gets embarrassed, twiddles some search-weighting knobs, and the results change. Read the rest

Devin Nunes says Democrats tried to get nude pictures of Trump from Ukrainians

California Rep. Devin Nunes said a bizarre thing this morning at a questioning of Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire: “Of course, Democrats on this very committee negotiated with people they thought were Ukrainians in order to obtain nude pictures of Trump.”

Apparently, the confused gentleman was referring to an old Russian prank. According to Vice, two Russian comedians pranked House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff last year "claiming to possess naked photos of the president."

Via Vice: "At the time, Schiff directed the pranksters –– who posed as members of the Ukrainian Parliament –– to send their photos to the FBI." Somehow Nunes didn't get the memo.

Sponsor of the "Discouraging Frivolous Lawsuits Act" sues Twitter cow-account for $250 million

Devin Nunes (previously) is a Trump-loyalist whose scandals have ranged from secretly moving his family farm to make it easier to hire undocumented workers to a bizarre obsession with the Steele Dossier; and like a lot of far-right types, he's big on "preventing frivolous lawsuits" (which is to say, he wants to make it harder for the public to sue companies that harm them, which is why he cosponsored last year's Discouraging Frivolous Lawsuits Act. Devin Nunes tells Fox today that Trump never met with Papadopoulos, but photo shows he is lying

Rep. Devin Nunes, author of Friday's declassified dud memo, told a big fat lie on Fox and Friends this morning.

"As far as we can tell, Papadopoulos never even knew who Trump was — never even met with the president,” Nunes said with a straight face.

Nunes was referring to the Trump campaign's foreign policy advisor George Papadopoulos, who is now a major witness in the Russia investigation.

But this isn't true. Papadopoulos did meet with Trump, and there is proof:

In the picture above, from Trump's own Instagram account, Papadopoulos is the straight-backed gentleman sitting third from the left, while Trump is to the right at the foot of the table.

According to Vox:

In fact, this specific meeting is quite important. According to internal Trump campaign emails obtained by the Washington Post, Papadopoulos offered to broker “a meeting between us and the Russian leadership to discuss US-Russia ties under President Trump.”

In other words, not only did Trump meet with Papadopoulos, but they literally discussed building a bridge between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.

Here's a video of Nunes fibbing to Fox, as Fox's Friends complacently sit there with mock serious expressions.

Now that they know the NSA is spying on them, Congress is really worried about domestic surveillance
