Los Angeles: The Tony Martini HOLIDAY Variety Show is this Saturday!

The Tony Martini Variety Hour rings in a swinging holiday season with an incredible line-up at Hollywood's Three Clubs!

Three of my favorite comedic actors: Mark Fite, Renee Albert, and Jim Turner are back in The Tony Martini Variety Hour. Every month Mark and Renee share their hilariously broken-down lounge act and Turner tries to fire them! The fantastic performances of their variety acts save the show!

Amazing contortionist Bonnie Morgan, charming puppeteer Pam Severns, and the bat-shit crazy Michael Rayner, who plays with his food, will be amongst the many wonderful performances comprising this holiday edition of the revue. They'll be accompanied by music man Ben Jaffe.

Oh, and I've been told Fite's Tony Martini and Albert's Bananas Foster have a band new "holiday number" to share!

Come join in all the fun! Read the rest

Los Angeles: The variety hour that won't end! Tony Martini is back!

The Tony Martini Variety Hour returns to The Three Clubs this Saturday night! I'm going!

Mark Fite, Renee Albert, Jim Turner and a cast of vaudevillians, burlesque dancers and god knows what are getting together to put on a couple of hours of good old fashioned variety! A form of entertainment largely thought dead by the early 1980s!

Tony Martini, your host, and titular lounge singer-y guy is portrayed by Los Angeles' comedic hurricane Mark Fite. Mark sings, jokes, and frequently falls flat on his face. Luckily, Martini is accompanied by his super talented wife, Bananas Foster. Foster could only be played by rock and roll accordion grand master Renee Albert. Boing Boing favorite Jim Turner plays their less than kind and understanding manager.

Produced by Steven Espinosa, the cast is joined by a veritable mob of Los Angeles finest variety acts: Michael Rayner, Pam Severns, Karl Herlinger, April Showers, Hannah Beavers, Sarah Elizabeth Pace and the always mindbending contortionist Bonnie Morgan.

Live music will be performed by Ben Jaffe.

Bar opens at 7:30, show starts sometime thereafter. Tickets and more info here.

I'll be drinking heavily in the back. Read the rest

Los Angeles: The Tony Martini Variety Hour

The Tony Martini Variety Hour is running this Saturday, August 10th at the Three Clubs.

A desperate variety show clinging to the art, music, and style that worked so well in the late 50s and early 60s takes the stage this Saturday night in the city of fallen angels! Amazing performers put everything they can into an art form we thought went away with the Star Wars Holiday Special! Come and marvel at the madness!

Tony Martini, your host, and titular lounge singer-y guy is portrayed by global comedy legend Mark Fite. Mark sings, jokes, and frequently falls flat on his face. Luckily, Martini is accompanied by his super talented wife, Bananas Foster. Foster could only be played by international accordion phenomenon Renee Albert. Los Angeles: Join Dr. Zaius and Jim Turner as they 'Stand Up for America'

On Thursday, August 8th, in Silverlake, California you have the opportunity to see some amazing performers. The line-up includes Jim Turner, Dana Gould, and legendary guitarist Laurence Juber, all while supporting Swing Left Los Feliz.

Evidently Gould will be portraying everyone's favorite conversant simian, Dr. Zaius.

Hi, folks! It’s me, Jim Turner (yes, that Jim Turner)…

I am working with a group putting on a benefit to raise funds to contribute to Dan McCreadys’ special election campaign to fill the seat representing North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District in the U.S. House. The special election, which will be held on September 10, 2019, follows allegations the Republican candidate committed election fraud in the initial election. It’s essential McCready is successful in his congressional bid and Swing Left Los Feliz (our group) aims to provide recourses to help make that happen - so the Democrats can hold the House while working towards flipping the Senate.

And equally important: this particular election will be a referendum on trump and is really the first big election of 2020. It’s very important we win it.

The benefit we’re throwing is Thursday, August 8 at The Satellite (used to be Spaceland in Silverlake) at 8:00. And it’s actually one of those benefits that's worth the price. You don’t even have to like Dan McCready. You’ll be that happy you come. Mainly because the inimitable, Dana Gould, will be emceeing the night in a very rare appearance as Dr. Zaius from Planet of the Apes!

Also appearing will be:

Moses Storm Laurence Juber From Mueller She Wrote (Jordan Coburn, Jaleesa Johnson, and A.G.)

Don't blink or you'll miss Jim Turner in "Dr. Brinks & Dr. Brinks"

Jim Turner is on the movie poster for Dr. Brinks & Dr. Brinks, so you might expect to see him in it.

Jim plays Doctor Brinks, a humanitarian who dies before the movie begins, in a plane crash with his humanitarian wife, also Doctor Brinks. The film opens at the funeral. Their long separated children are total shits. Raucous hilarity ensues.

Jim is briefly in a flashback sequence.

As of today you can stream Dr. Brinks & Dr. Brinks via a whole bunch of streaming services, including YouTube, Amazon, and Apple. Read the rest

Ben Jaffe's 'Dominator'

Enjoy this fantastic, titular, trippy video from one half of HONEYHONEY, Bejamin Jaffe's new solo album Dominator.

Baeble blog had this to say:

At this point, it's no secret that we are absolutely obsessed with anything HONEYHONEY-related. It all started back in 2012 when we filmed a concert with the duo in Austin, TX. Then just last month, we welcomed one half of HONEYHONEY, Suzanne Santo, to our studio for a powerful session filled with lots of laughter. Naturally, now it's time to let the other half of the duo, Benjamin Jaffe, shine.

It's safe to say we were pretty excited to receive "Dominator," the video for the lead single off of Jaffe's upcoming solo debut Oh, Wild Ocean of Love (out March 30th on Diamond Family Records). In the minimalistic visual, we see Jaffe sing against a white backdrop as graphics of drum kits flash, synchronized with the glitchy beat. Jaffe's vocal is smooth as butter and serves up spine-tingling harmonies reminiscent of Father John Misty. This gorgeous arrangement just goes to show that, while we will forever love HONEYHONEY, Jaffe stepping into the spotlight and showing off his musical chops might just be a really great move.

Jaffe sent Baeble this quirky statement on the video: "We made this video with a little budget and a big dream of me eating the shrunken heads of politicians. Without (co-director) Sage Atwood, it never would have happened. See, without friends, dreams are just silly little stories to wile away the time.

Notes from the #MeToo march: thoughts and prayers can't right what is wrong

I met Jackie Fox of the Runaways in 2015 after I wrote an article on Boing Boing in response to her rape disclosure and the treatment it was getting in the press. Jackie was drugged and raped in front of a large group of people at a party. Jason Cherkis, an investigative reporter for Huffington Post, wrote an exhaustively researched piece about the rape, interviewed many witnesses, and outlined the complex reasons Jackie was coming forward 40 years later. Her story was not only rock solid--she had witnesses. Still, her former bandmate, Joan Jett, put out a statement essentially calling Jackie's rape part of a "bizarre relationship."

I was angry watching the public tide turn against Jackie after Joan's dismissive statement was released, especially as a fellow assault survivor. Around the same time, more Cosby women were coming forward, and I was disgusted with the default reaction of seeing women doubted, disparaged, and denigrated. I wrote the piece, Neil Gaiman tweeted it out, and people took note. And so, my friendship with Jackie Fox began. It was coincidental that I was also the bassist in an all-female band, Babes in Toyland, but it gave us a natural camaraderie.

So when Jackie invited me to go to the recent #MeTooMarch in Hollywood, I was honored to join her. The #MeToo movement had sprung up amid the Weinstein scandal after actress Alyssa Milano encouraged others to share their sexual abuse, assault, and harassment experiences with the hashtag #MeToo, and rightly credited Tarana Burke of Just BE Inc., Read the rest

Original Robby the Robot suit up for auction

The original, iconic and much replicated Robby the Robot suit is up for auction.

Via Bonhams:

In 1970, Robby and his Jeep were purchased privately from M-G-M by Jim Brucker and both were displayed throughout the 1970s at Movie World/Cars of the Stars. By 1979, Robby had fallen somewhat into disrepair; filmmaker and collector Bill Malone, who had previously built the first full Robby replica, acquired him that year. Using original spare parts included with Robby, Malone restored him to his full glory. (Robby's current hands are recasts from his original hands; the originals were rubber and naturally deteriorated over time. The "bubble" dome on Robby's head is not an original but was made from an original M-G-M studio mold. An original Robby dome is included which has yellowed with age.)

After Robby's restoration, he occasionally cameoed in films like Gremlins (1984) and periodically made public appearances at conventions, screenings, and other events, including the 2016 Turner Classic Movies Film Festival. He has been replicated countless times as toys, model kits, and other memorabilia. Robby was also recently honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in a special retrospective of Forbidden Planet; he remained on display at the Academy for two months. The original Robby is fully operational, has been carefully maintained for nearly four decades, and is as stunning as ever.

Ducks Breath Mystery Theater's Grand Finale

Grand Finale, a documentary covering legendary comedy troupe Ducks Breath Mystery Theater's final performance, is now available on iTunes!

For 40 years Bill Allard, Dan Coffey, Merle Kessler, Leon Martell, and Jim Turner performed together as Ducks Breath Mystery Theater. From their humble start in Iowa City, to their humble decades on the West Coast, the troupe entertained audiences across the country, on radio and television.

Some of their characters grew to be more popular than the team itself! Merle Kessler's caustic pundit Ian Shoales may have been the inspiration for Bill O'Reilly. Dan Coffey's Dr. Science predicted a nation of climate deniers, and Jim Turner's Randee of the Redwoods would go on to become Generation X's most treasured presidential candidate.

It was always more than a box!

Two indie zombie novels that may make Christmas Eve pass easier

I've read a bunch of new indie zombie novels, via Kindle Unlimited, this week! Here are two very funny, fasted paced stories that will help pass the time, as you wait in ambush for an overweight, red suited home invader to exit your chimney.

David Achord's Zombie Rules series was a serious page turner. I read all 4 novels in the series, Zombie Rules, Z14, Zfinity, and Destiny, in about a day! Achord tells the tale of Zach, an under privileged 16 year old who turns out to be the smartest, and most important guy on earth! Told from the pov of a teenager who is full of himself, the story never lacks for silly.

Achord writes great action, and builds a fun post-zombie apocalypse world. This is a really fun series, where the gore isn't too gory, and the plot has some unexpected twists and turns! The action and world building are good enough you ignore the plot holes and ridiculousness of some situations, as they are done to keep the pace up. Watch Zach save the world, and just not understand girls.

Second up is Chaos Theory by Rick Restucci. A super-sized survivalist, a teenaged girl, and an escaped convict make their way south, from New England to the Gulf of Mexico, trying to survive the zombie menace. The convict also happens to have been bitten, but did not turn, so naturally the remnants of the US Federal government are after him. Being a criminal, he doesn't seem to care much about helping the world find a vaccine. Read the rest
