The editors of Boing Boing have always wanted to create an event where people can enjoy a weekend of wonderful, magical, mindblowing, inspiring experiences. Guess what? We're doing it, and you're invited.
We've got an incredible lineup of special guests coming to Boing Boing's Weekend of Wonder in September. In the coming weeks, we'll introduce them here. This week, meet Olivia Olson and Martin Olson!
Olivia is a singer-songwriter and actress, known for her voice roles as Vanessa Doofenshmirtz in Phineas and Ferb and Marceline the Vampire Queen in Adventure Time. — Read the rest
Kalev Leetaru programatically recovered all the images that were discarded by the OCR program that digitizes the millions of public domain books scanned by the Archive; these were cropped, cleaned up, and uploaded to Flickr with the text that appears before and after them, and links to see their whole scanned page.
Banksy's classic "taking the piss" essay (adapted from an essay by Sean Tejaratchi) is a moving, important screed about the colonization of public space by advertising.
The Zen Pencils illustrated version gives very welcome visual component to Banksy's words, reminding us that as articulate as Banksy might be, his real power is in the image. — Read the rest
Signs, from liartownusa.tumblr.com, the best Tumblr ever. I consistently laugh until I am in pain when I look at Sean Tejaratchi's work. He's a genius.
Pacific Ocean Park–or as it was commonly known in Los Angeles from the '50s through the '70s, P.O.P.–was extraordinary in both its glamorous rise and spectacular fall. As a family-oriented attraction in the '50s with modernist-styled rides designed by Hollywood's best, P.O.P.'s — Read the rest
We've often pointed to posts from Liartown, USA, Sean Tejaratchi's funny, profane, NSFW Tumblr. Today, he's really scored with a gratuitously sweary and convulsively funny calendar about lighthouses. If this were an actual article of commerce, it would have topped my Christmas wishlist.
Here's the trailer for The Adventure Time Encyclopaedia book trailer. The book, which is fantastically weird and fun, was written by my pal Martin Olson, who plays Hunson Abadeer (aka "The Lord of Evil") on Adventure Time. — Read the rest
I posted last week about Banksy possibly stealing written material from Sean Tejaratchi in Crap Hound. Like most rumors, the truth is significantly less salacious. In fact, it sounds like this whole thing was just a big, sloppy misunderstanding.
I'm a fan of Banksy's work and was relieved to hear this. — Read the rest
It appears that the (kind of great) Banksy rant about advertising that's been going around lately is excerpted from his 2004 book Cut It Out and was actually written/inspired by Sean Tejaratchi circa 1999.
My copies of the beautifully designed clip-art zine Crap Hound are among my most treasured possessions. Sean Tejaratchi, the creator, has a Kickstarter to reprint Volume #6, which has a theme of "Death, Telephones & Scissors!"
Sean is currently working on a book-length version of Crap Hound devoted to "Unhappy People" to be published by Feral House Press, so we thought we'd reprint an old favorite — Crap Hound #6: Death, Scissors & Telephones with a 16-pg.
One of the most exciting secondhand store moments ever: discovering a beautifully preserved 19th century Masonic uniform with dozens of buttons, embroidered crosses, a skull and bones apron, official belt, and pointy "Chapeau" hat topped with white ostrich feathers. — Read the rest
Eerie Publications' horror magazines brought blood and bad taste to America's newsstands from 1965 through 1975. Ultra-gory covers and bottom-of-the-barrel production values lent an air of danger to every issue, daring you to look at (and purchase) them.
The Weird World of Eerie Publications (Feral House, 2010) introduces the reader to Myron Fass, the gun-toting megalomaniac publisher who, with tyranny and glee, made a career of fishing pocketbook change from young readers with the most insidious sort of exploitation. — Read the rest
Chloe Eudaly (proprietress of Reading Frenzy/Show & Tell Press) says:
Crap Hound is the sporadically published vintage line art zine my friend Sean Tejaratchi edits and I publish. We have 3 issues slated for publication this year and are using Kickstarter to raise funds to get the first one to press.
Issue 7 of Sean Tejaratchi's seminal clip-art zine CRAP HOUND is just about to hit the stands, thanks to the good folks at Portland's Reading Frenzy, a zine store par excellance. CRAP HOUND plunders its graphics from hundreds of sources and then features them in gorgeous, endlessly fascinating mosaics and layouts. — Read the rest
