Lindows, the makers of the Windows-compatible Linux distribution, have shipped a "commodity" laptop for $800: it runs at 933MHz, has a 12" display, and comes with Ethernet, FireWire, USB 2.0, as well as a PCMCIA cage for a WiFi card or what have you.
