Not every phone is meant to connect two living people. At San Francisco's Sunset Dunes, a bright blue phone booth gives visitors a chance to speak the words they never got to say to someone they've lost. You can watch someone using the phone here in this sweet video.
The rotary phone inside has no service, no wires, and no way to place a real call. Instead, people step inside to share a moment with someone who is gone. You can also drop a small stone into an old pipe instead of using a quarter, and hear the sound of an old payphone.
The installation was created by Bay Area artists Jamae Tasker and Sarah McCarthy Grimm. The artists bonded through their own experiences with loss. Inspired by Japan's famous Wind Phone, the booth has become a place where strangers can pause and reflect.
