I've been enjoying the hell out of Ethan Hawke's work over the past few years. His turns in The Good Lord Bird, The Lowdown, and First Reformed have been powerful, entertaining stuff that makes me glad I put down the book I'm reading long enough to enjoy them. It looks like Hawke is back with more of the good stuff, and he's dragging Russell Crowe along for the ride.
Set in 1933, The Weight stars Hawke as a father sentenced to hard labor for his crimes. Desperate to return to his young daughter before she becomes a ward of the state, he strikes a deal with the work camp's supervisor (Crowe): his freedom in exchange for smuggling a backpack full of gold bars through 100 miles of rough forest terrain. Greed and drama ensue.
Unfortunately, we'll have to wait to see The Weight: it won't be in theatres until September 18th.
