I've featured Remo Camerota's work and books on Boing Boing many times. He's a talented artist and designer with a love for robot art. His latest project is an iOS application that lets you design DEVO-inspired robot art and play music using unreleased DEVO sounds. They are seeking $15,000 on Kickstarter.

The technology that links taxonomy and Star Trek

He collected $14, not $14,000.  I love Devo, but not sure why if they have the app 90% done why they need to raise 15K to fund the remaining 10%.  Can’t they finish the remaining 10%, charge a reasonable price for it, and make money by selling the app like the old days?

Hi Dave, basically for the last year the team have worked on this with nothing or very little in return. We are talking about the designers and programming team. These guys have gone above and beyond and it would be awesome if they could get some compensation for their great work (especially as we still have a bunch of work to do on the App). Secondly, we need funds to expand on the DevoBot world and create an Android version, Which has not been started yet but has been requested by the public. Without Kickstater we may never get around to making the Android version. Thirdly, we want to expand on the concept and create vinyl figures from the characters for release. These have not been started either, so we need to fund all of the aspects of making quality toys like this. Hours of labour, 3D printing machinery , cad design software and a team to do it. I hope this answers your question.

I’ve certainly seen the opposite problem on Kickstarter, where they are so far from finished that I’m skeptical as to their ability to do so.

Rush already does this with their own music. If you’ve seen Rush in the last ten years you’ve been listening to keyboards playing samples of the original recordings rather than new synth sounds. Helps Geddy focus on the bass, and he’s been much better on the bass recently than he ever has been.
