Long Lost Personal is an archive devoted to preserving vintage personal ads from decades past. Curated from old newspapers and alternative weeklies, the project collects tiny fragments of human longing, awkwardness, humor, and hope. Take a stroll into the past, where everything was typed out by people searching for connection long before dating apps existed.
Each ad captures a strange little snapshot of a person's life. Some are sweet and sincere, others hilarious, poetic, lonely, or unexpectedly haunting. Together, they create an accidental time capsule of romance and loneliness across generations. Reading through them feels oddly intimate, like flipping through abandoned diary entries or overhearing conversations from another era.
This one is my personal favorite. It's titled "Meow" and says:
The more I learn about men, the more I love my cat. Wanted: Man with qualities of cat! Sinewy, well groomed, agile, independent, affectionate, keeps me warm at night, comes when called, brings me treasures to show how appreciated I am – purrr!
I have to agree with this ad. What more could a woman want?
The archive describes itself with the comforting phrase: "You will find love, in time," and asks that reposts be credited. Based in Chicago, the project has developed an online cult following among people fascinated by nostalgia, human connection, and forgotten media ephemera.
