Canadian doctors won't treat American trans patients — and here's why

It looks like the Trump administration's anti-trans bullshit has drifted north. According to the Canadian Broadcast Corporation, the student health clinic at McGill University has refused Hormone Replacement Therapy to American students studying in Canada, citing legal advice from the Canadian Medical Protective Association.

American laws shouldn't mean shit to anyone doing their thing outside of the United States. So, you've got to wonder why a Canadian doctor would disallow HRT to some poor soul who wants nothing more than to be their authentic self. Well, much like stupidity, fear is a growth industry. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services hosts a webpage for shitbirds to blow the whistle on doctors who dare help a patient maintain authority over their bodies. The form only lets rats name the state a professional is from — but there's a dropdown with a field for zip code or postal code. Postal codes are a Canadian thing.

Most Canadians won't even sell or drink American booze these days (not to mention Prime Minister Mark Carney's vocal disdain for American domestic and foreign policy), so there's little chance American law gets enforced north of the Wall. Outside Canada, though, it's a different story. Doctors on HHS's shit list might have to worry about being arrested while vacationing or attending a medical conference in the States.

Unsurprisingly, McGill University is keeping its snoot out of this one: the institution told the CBC that medical care at its clinics is decided by the physicians who work there.

Quebec's legal drinking age is 18. American students who can't drink back home until they're 21 are allowed to get shitfaced at any bar on the McGill campus. I couldn't find a single story of an American being refused a beer in Canada because the drinking age back home is higher.

If only a doctor could be as brave as a bartender.
