Last April, a powerful spring snowstorm swept across parts of the Alps, triggering dangerous avalanche conditions in multiple regions. In some areas, avalanche danger reached Level 4–5 on Europe's standard scale.
This incredible clip shared by @imlukesnow shows an avalanche protection gallery, also known as a snow shed. These reinforced concrete structures are built over roads in known avalanche paths so that when snow slides down the mountain, it passes over the roadway while traffic continues safely underneath.
Rather than stopping avalanches, these shelters redirect them above protected sections of road. They are widely used across Alpine countries like Switzerland, Austria, France, and Italy as part of mountain safety infrastructure. The massive avalanche tumbling down around the small safety area of the snow shed in the video feels like a scene from a scary movie. Surviving an avalanche while standing under one of these shelters looks like a surreal experience.
