After months spent merrily ignoring and dismissing warnings about a security problem in their service, Snapchat got told today: 4.6m usernames and phone numbers leaked alongside a claim that 10 lines of code would have plugged the hole. The site hosting the full database dump soon fell over, unsurprisingly, but its contents are already in many places: here's a checker to see if you got compromised. Snapchat has some explaining to do, and not just to users of the supposedly privacy-protecting service. Investors may well wonder why the supposedly $3bn company, always cagey about its stats, has a relatively modest number of users to leak in the first place: based on the area codes represented in the leak, a total somewhere around 20m.
